1.4 Asking the right question

a. Feasible

  • Number of samples: Too many studies are unable to answer a question satisfactorily, because there is a too small number of samples. Sample number should be realistically determined at the onset. Be willing to ask your question from a less ambitious approach, or be ready to abandon the project if no answer can be found.
  • Technical aspects: Appropriate experience and the right technical equipment are necessary to properly measure the variables of interest and analyze the data. Working with a specialist, such as a biostatistician, is often essential to avail oneself with the full range of technical skills that are needed.
  • Cost:The cost of each phase of the project must be accurately budgeted, keeping in mind that actual costs often exceed estimates.
  • Staying focused:Do not try to answer too many questions at a time.
