b. Cohort study (1954, 1956) :

  • the objective: to compare the incidence of lung cancer as related to tobacco consumption

  • 40,000 physicians were included

These results confirmed those of the case-control study. The incidence of lung cancers was significantly higher in smokers when compared to nonsmokers. This increase was a function of the amount of tobacco consumed.
