4. Conclusion

Epidemiology thus allows us to:

  • Identify the etiology or the cause of a disease and its risk factors (factors that increase the risk of developing this disease)

  • Determine/quantify the spread of the disease in the community

  • Know the natural history of the disease and its prognosis

  • Evaluate new means of prevention and treatment, and analyze new ways to provide access to and deliver health care

  • Produce a strong case for the development of healthcare policies and easier decision-making processes related to environmental and other types of health problems.
