1.2 Background on Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHF)

1.2.1 Clinical Definition

  • Acute infection begins with a fever (≥38°C), muscular pains, fatigue and evolves into a severe illness

  • Organs are affected differently depending on the virus

  • Increasing vascular permeability of capillary blood vessels

  • Hemorrhages due to lesions of the small and micro blood capillaries as well as a lowered platelet count

  • State of shock, massive hemorrhage and encephalopathy indicate a bad prognosis
