Ebola diagnostics

2.2 Ebola viral disease biological diagnostics

2.2.2 Laboratory techniques

2.2.2.2 ELISA

Detects the presence of antigens circulating in blood or in samples collected post mortem.

2.2.2.3 Serology
  • Specific IgG detection and IgM capture ELISA assays

  • Assays based on inactivated viral antigens

  • Good specificity and sensitivity but positive results appear late

  • An IgG on its own can never confirm an acute illness because these antibodies persist a long time after recovery
