2.1 The beginnings of epidemiology

John Graunt (1620-1674)

John Graunt was the first to notice that the numbers of births and deaths of men were greater than those of women.

He also noted that despite a higher mortality rate, men had a lower morbidity rate than women. He calculated the high mortality rate among children for the first time, noting that one-third of them died before the age of five.
