He was a leading British doctor/epidemiologist, considered as one of the pioneers of medical statistics.

He helped establish the first register of births and deaths after his appointment to the office of the General Register in 1838. He developed an interest in the production and use of medical statistics. His most important contribution was the establishment of a national register that recorded the cause of death.
