3. Biosafety in case of suspected Ebola

3.1 Background on protection against contamination by the Ebola virus

The principles of good microbiological practice and occupational safety should be applied in the daily work routine, as well as if Ebola is suspected (See also RESAOLAB’s “Biosafety” training module).

In order for the health care personnel to work in safe conditions, the following minimum conditions are necessary:

  • Enough clean water and bleach should be made available in the various standardized concentrations required for their intended use

  • Hands should be systematically washed before and after contact with any patient

  • If possible wear gloves

  • Handle needles and syringes with care and dispose of sharps and blades properly.
