3. Biosafety in case of suspected Ebola

3.1 Background on protection against contamination by the Ebola virus (2)

Instructions for good laboratory practice and occupational hygiene include (among others):

  • Offer appropriate training to the personnel

  • When appropriate, put in place biosafety committees

  • When appropriate, post signs indicating biohazard

  • Make available decontamination and wash stations for personnel and above all else promote the use of the hydroalcoholic disinfecting solution in the laboratory

  • Forbid eating, drinking, smoking, application of cosmetics or storing food intended for human consumption in the work zone

  • Forbid pipetting with the mouth

  • Provide written instructions on typical operating procedures to guarantee safety (when needed)

  • Ensure that you have effective disinfecting products and precise disinfection procedures in case pathogens have spread

  • When appropriate, plan a place to store safely contaminated equipment and laboratory supplies

  • Programmed clean-up:

    • Daily: Benches, floors

    • Once a week: ceilings and walls

    • Others: fridges, freezers and storage places

    • Record the date and person(s) who cleaned
