1.1 Definition of gene expression

Gene expression, also called genic expression is the set of biochemical processes through which the hereditary information contained within a gene is read to give rise to the synthesis of molecules, such as proteins or RNAs, which play an active role in cellular function.

  • DNA: Large molecule with low mobility. Stores genetic information.
  • RNA: Small mobile molecule. Plays various roles in protein synthesis.
