This kind of mutation will modify the sequence of the primary transcript, and will have variable consequences:

  • No effect: a mutation within an intron, for example

  • Splicing error: a mutation leading to the loss of recognition of an intron boundary, for example

  • Modified protein sequence: a mutation within the sequence encoding the protein
