Ebola diagnostics

2.1 Sample collection procedures

2.1.1 Blood sample

For the PCR diagnostics of an Ebola infection, the laboratory requires (ideally) a whole blood sample, or a blood clot, serum or plasma sample.

For IgM and IgG viral antigen detection, a whole blood, serum or plasma sample is necessary (it is preferable to use whole blood because any centrifugation increases the biohazard exposure risk for the laboratory personnel).

2.1.1.1 Practical advice

Preliminary steps:

  • Check first that all required supplies are available (sample collection vials/containers, single use collection system, antiseptic, dressing, tourniquet etc.)

  • Check that PPE are available

  • Check that a bag is available to dispose of waste as well as a container for contaminated sharps and needles. Both the bag and container should be near the patient’s bedside

Sample collection steps:

  • Put the PPE on, then enter in the collection room

  • Identify the patient (last name, first name, date of birth)

  • Verify the vials/tubes and that all samples are labelled properly

  • Collect the sample with all the necessary precautions and dispose of waste
